U.S. military planners are developing contingency options that could involve deploying American forces to Cuba, with Army Reserve units now reviewing their readiness to provide logistical, medical, and security support, according to a new report.

The planning does not represent an order to deploy troops, but several reports indicate that the Pentagon has been examining potential military options involving Cuba for months. Axios first reported in May that the Trump administration was considering contingencies related to the communist island.

CBS News reported Friday that Army Reserve headquarters directed commands to provide information on units that could support U.S. Southern Command over the next four months. The request reportedly does not mention Cuba, but multiple U.S. officials told CBS that Cuba is the focus of the planning.

Among the units being assessed is a combat sustainment support battalion responsible for transportation, maintenance, fuel and supplies, along with an engineer battalion. The Army Reserve is also reviewing medical capabilities, including a medical brigade and a forward resuscitative and surgical detachment capable of providing emergency surgery and trauma care closer to U.S. forces.

The review also includes a military police brigade that could provide security and conventional law enforcement functions during an operation.

U.S. Southern Command declined to discuss specific operational plans or potential deployment timelines, citing operational security concerns. The command said it regularly coordinates with the Joint Force to assess potential requirements within its area of responsibility.

The Pentagon has been examining a range of possible military responses involving Cuba. CBS reported in July that potential options could include the deployment of paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been a central figure in the administration's Cuba policy and has repeatedly described the communist government as a national security concern for the United States.

“Having a failed state 90 miles from our shores is a threat to the national security of the United States,” Rubio has said.

The reported military preparations come as the Trump administration continues to consider its options toward Cuba, although there has been no public announcement of an order for U.S. forces to conduct military operations on the island.
