Sony Pictures’ “Resident Evil” opened to an estimated $60 million from 3,684 theaters in the United States and Canada over the weekend, giving the video game-inspired franchise its biggest domestic opening ever.

Directed by Zach Cregger, whose previous horror films include “Barbarian” and “Weapons,” the movie stars Austin Abrams as a medical courier whose final delivery takes him into a dangerous Raccoon City overrun by infected creatures. The film has received strong reviews, with a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes as of Sunday.

The opening also marked a new domestic record for Cregger. “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” released in 2010, previously held the franchise’s highest domestic total at $60.1 million over its entire theatrical run, without adjusting for inflation.

The new film cost a reported $75 million to produce before marketing expenses and added another $48.3 million internationally. Its worldwide opening reached approximately $108.3 million.

The audience was 66% male and 75% under the age of 35, according to PostTrak exit polling, while moviegoers gave the film a B+ CinemaScore. Cregger’s previous films have also performed strongly relative to their budgets, with “Barbarian” earning more than $46 million domestically on a budget below $5 million and “Weapons” reaching $270 million worldwide on a reported $38 million budget.

“Practical Magic 2” placed a distant second with $12.2 million domestically in its second weekend, followed by “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” with $6.5 million. “The Odyssey” earned $4.9 million, while “Coyote vs. Acme” rounded out the top five with $4.5 million.
