Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met Tuesday with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York and expressed hope that the American leader would help bring an end to Russia's war in Ukraine before winter.

"I hope we will end this war, and President Trump will help us end this war," Zelenskyy said during the meeting. "I think we need to do this as quick as possible — before winter."

Trump, who nodded in agreement, told reporters afterward that Russian President Vladimir Putin is willing to meet with Zelenskyy to discuss ending the conflict. "He’ll meet. He’s willing to meet. He wants to see the war end," Trump said.

The roughly 40-minute discussion covered potential de-escalation steps, including a reciprocal energy ceasefire that would halt strikes on energy infrastructure by both sides. Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is prepared for any format of such an agreement but emphasized it must be mutual. He also signaled readiness for trilateral talks involving himself, Trump, and Putin.

"I’m ready for a trilateral meeting," Zelenskyy told reporters after the session. "It means that I’m agreeing to end the war."

The meeting followed a weekend phone call between the two leaders and recent visits to the region by Trump administration envoys. The war, now in its fifth year, has seen continued attacks on energy targets and other infrastructure despite earlier diplomatic overtures.

Trump has repeatedly stated his belief that a deal is achievable and that Putin wants the fighting to stop. Both leaders described the talks as productive and focused on practical steps to reduce hostilities and address security concerns.

Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine has proposed multiple diplomatic initiatives aimed at securing lasting peace while protecting its sovereignty and preventing future aggression. The United States remains central to any effort to bring Russia to the negotiating table, he added.
