Former Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin appeared in a Louisville courtroom Friday wearing an orange jail jumpsuit after being arrested Thursday on an outstanding contempt-of-court warrant.

Jefferson Family Court Judge Angela Johnson declined to reduce Bevin’s sentence or allow him to serve it under an alternative arrangement, citing what she described as his “complete disregard and utter disrespect” for the court.

“You have done nothing to show the court that you are willing to act in good faith,” Johnson told Bevin. “I will not allow you to taint the integrity of this court or any court with that kind of behavior.”

Johnson had issued an arrest warrant after Bevin repeatedly failed to provide financial records requested in an ongoing divorce and child support dispute involving one of his adopted children, Jonah Bevin. Bevin also failed to appear in person for a subsequent hearing.

The former governor was arrested Thursday evening by the Bourbon County Sheriff’s Office while he was reportedly working as a featured extra on a Christmas movie being filmed at a horse farm in Paris, Kentucky. He was later booked into the Louisville Metro Detention Center.

Bevin’s attorney, Louisville lawyer Scott Cox, asked Johnson to consider reducing the sentence or allowing Bevin to serve the time under home detention. Cox argued that Bevin’s arrest had already gotten his attention and that he would comply with the court going forward.

“To the extent that the court maybe rightly wanted to get his attention, I can tell you that you have accomplished that,” Cox said.

An attorney representing Jonah Bevin opposed the request, arguing that Bevin had known about the court’s orders and had avoided complying with them for months.

Johnson sided with that argument but indicated she could consider some form of relief after 30 days if Bevin demonstrates improvement.

“That is not to say that I won't be open to after 30 days,” Johnson said. “But you are going to serve these 60 days as of today.”

Bevin did not speak during Friday’s hearing and was escorted back to jail afterward.

Jonah Bevin is seeking child support from his parents as part of the broader family court dispute. His attorneys have also raised allegations concerning his placement at a troubled-teen facility in Jamaica that was later shut down.

Bevin, a Republican, served as Kentucky governor from 2015 to 2019. He lost his 2019 reelection bid to Democrat Andy Beshear.
