A 38-year-old Illinois mother has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder after her 2-year-old son was found hanging inside the family’s Frankfort home Tuesday, according to prosecutors and court documents.

Police responded to the home on the 22700 block of Brook Stone Court shortly after 4 p.m. following a report of an injured child. A neighbor found the boy, identified as Barrett Walsh, hanging from a rafter in the basement and began performing CPR after removing the ligature. The child was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead.

A preliminary autopsy determined that Barrett died from asphyxia caused by ligature compression of the neck, prosecutors said. A final determination on the cause and manner of death remains pending.

Walsh was also found inside the home attempting to harm herself. Officers discovered her in a bathtub with cuts to her wrists and thighs. She was taken to a hospital for treatment, and her injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

According to court documents, Walsh allegedly told officers at the scene that she “did this to her baby” because she believed he was the “devil” and the “anti-Christ.” Prosecutors said she later made additional statements at the hospital describing how she killed Barrett, and investigators said those statements were consistent with evidence recovered at the home.

The case has also drawn attention because of Walsh’s reported interest in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three children in 2023. Prosecutors said witnesses told investigators Walsh had become “very invested” in the Clancy case and had been actively discussing the trial with friends in a group text message until just hours before the discovery of her son.

Authorities have not established that Walsh’s interest in the Clancy case played a role in the alleged killing.

An infant and two school-aged children were also inside the home or returned there around the time Barrett was discovered. Prosecutors said the other children were not physically harmed. Walsh’s husband was out of state when the incident occurred.

Walsh remains in custody while receiving medical treatment. Prosecutors are seeking to have her held without pretrial release, and investigators are continuing to examine evidence, including her cellphone.
