Hundreds of masked protesters blocked roads leading to the Port of Dover on Saturday, halting traffic in both directions on the A20 and creating miles of congestion for ferry passengers and freight.

The demonstrators, dressed in black and wearing balaclavas, occupied multiple locations around the ferry terminal, preventing vehicles from entering or exiting the port. National Highways reported approximately four miles of congestion with delays reaching up to 45 minutes. The Port of Dover described the situation as an ongoing public order incident affecting all routes in and out of the facility.

Kent Police confirmed officers were on scene engaging with the group. Ferry operators including P&O Ferries and DFDS stated that sailings continued but advised passengers to expect adjustments, with those missing departures accommodated on subsequent crossings.

Witnesses estimated the crowd at 300 to 500 people. Some accounts linked the action to an anti-migration demonstration, with references to stopping small boat crossings that frequently arrive in the Dover area. Protesters reportedly planned to maintain the blockade over multiple days through rotating shifts.

The disruption comes amid ongoing concerns over illegal immigration via the English Channel, which has strained resources in Kent and prompted calls for stronger border enforcement. Local officials and travelers faced significant inconvenience as a result of the protest.

Port authorities remained in contact with police to resolve the incident and minimize further impact on operations and the surrounding community.
