The Park Slope Food Coop in New York City voted Tuesday to boycott Israeli-made products, joining a controversial campaign targeting the Jewish state amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
The decision passed with 67% in favor, 31% against, and 2% abstaining. The boycott will apply to a limited selection of Israeli goods, including certain produce, tahini, olive oil, and hair care products. It will remain in effect until Israel meets unspecified demands regarding “international law” and the Palestinian territories.
Longtime member Alyce Barr, who led the boycott effort, said voting yes was “voting against genocide, voting against apartheid,” and putting the co-op “on the right side of history.” The vote drew a massive turnout of 7,000 members, far more than a similar failed attempt in 2012.
The decision has deepened divisions within the 15,000-member cooperative, which has operated since 1973. Some members reported heated meetings, including accusations against Jewish participants. General Manager Joseph Szladek noted that most paid staff preferred a formal referendum rather than a membership vote.
The boycott reflects a growing wave of anti-Israel activism in left-leaning areas of New York City, even as the Jewish state continues to face existential threats from Hamas and other terrorist groups following the October 7, 2023, attacks.
