The Las Vegas Raiders have named veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins as their starting signal-caller for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season. Head coach Klint Kubiak announced this during a Wednesday news conference at the team's facility in Henderson, Nevada.

Kubiak said Cousins earned the role after a strong offseason and training camp. "He's played really good football," Kubiak told reporters. "Kirk's had a really good offseason, very good camp. He earned it." The decision came after Cousins took the majority of first-team repetitions throughout the preseason.

Cousins, 38, is entering his 15th NFL season. He signed with the Raiders as a free agent this offseason following two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. The four-time Pro Bowler will start the opener against the Miami Dolphins on September 13.

Rookie Fernando Mendoza, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, will serve as the backup. Mendoza completed 25 of 45 passes for 240 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions during the preseason. Cousins went 13 of 17 for 101 yards and a score in limited preseason action.

Kubiak indicated the team plans to develop Mendoza gradually rather than rush the rookie into the starting lineup. The coach also expressed satisfaction with the entire quarterback room, which includes Aidan O'Connell.

The move aligns with the Raiders' preference for a veteran presence at the position to begin the season. Cousins previously worked with Kubiak during their time together in Minnesota.

The Raiders open the regular season at home against Miami before traveling to face the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 2.
