President Donald Trump demanded Thursday that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer apologize to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and Border Patrol officers after the New York Democrat said on the Senate floor that "nobody respects" the agencies.
Trump posted on Truth Social: "Wow! Cryin’ Chuck Schumer just said, for the whole World to hear, that ‘NOBODY RESPECTS BORDER PATROL OR ICE.’ That is one of the most egregious, incorrect, unpatriotic, and dangerous statements I have EVER heard from a ‘professional’ politician. HE MUST IMMEDIATELY APOLOGIZE TO THESE GREAT PATRIOTS, AND I MEAN NOW!"

Schumer made the comments on Wednesday during a debate over Republican efforts to fund the agencies. "Adding $140 billion to an agency, to two groups, Border Patrol and ICE, that nobody respects in this country," Schumer said, criticizing a GOP budget reconciliation plan that advanced on a 50-48 vote. The plan seeks to provide an additional $70 billion for ICE and Customs and Border Protection amid a partial Department of Homeland Security shutdown that began February 14.
The shutdown stems from Democratic demands for policy changes following the fatal shootings of protesters. Republicans have pushed the funding measure without Democratic support through reconciliation to keep the agencies operational.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin condemned Schumer on Fox News, calling him "the definition of a lying scumbag politician." Mullin said the remarks disrespect officers protecting Americans and urged Schumer to admit support for open borders if opposed to enforcement funding.
The National Border Patrol Council also blasted Schumer for undermining agents who risk their lives. Alabama Sen. Katie Britt and other Republicans echoed the outrage, highlighting the agents' dedication.
Schumer responded that Republicans should prioritize lowering health care costs over "pumping hundreds of billions of dollars into ICE and Border Patrol." No apology from Schumer has been reported as of Thursday afternoon.
The exchange underscores ongoing partisan tensions over immigration enforcement and government funding. Republicans frame the GOP plan as essential for border security, while Democrats call for reforms tied to broader spending priorities.
