Authorities say the suspect accused of attempting to storm the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner had expressed intent to target members of the Trump administration, with family members reportedly warning law enforcement ahead of the incident.
President Donald Trump said in an interview Sunday that relatives of the suspect contacted police in Connecticut before the shooting, raising concerns about his behavior. Investigators later identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California.
According to federal officials, Allen traveled to Washington by train and checked into the Washington Hilton days before the event, which drew top administration officials, journalists, and public figures.
Acting Justice Department leader Todd Blanche said investigators reviewing the suspect’s writings, electronic devices, and interviews with family members believe he intended to target individuals connected to the administration, possibly including the president.
“It does appear that he did in fact set out to target folks who work in the administration, likely including the president,” Blanche said in a television interview.
Authorities said the suspect attempted to breach a security checkpoint outside the ballroom and was confronted by United States Secret Service agents. During the confrontation, the suspect fired a weapon, striking an agent’s bullet-resistant vest. The agent is expected to make a full recovery.
Law enforcement quickly subdued the suspect before he could enter the main event space, preventing what officials said could have been a far more serious attack. Allen was taken into custody and transported for medical evaluation.
Officials said the suspect had acquired firearms within the past several years and is currently not cooperating with investigators. Federal prosecutors indicated he will face multiple charges, with an initial court appearance expected Monday.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene inside the ballroom as shots rang out, prompting hundreds of attendees to take cover while security teams evacuated the president and other officials. The event was ultimately canceled and is expected to be rescheduled.
Trump, addressing reporters after the incident, described the attack as another serious security threat but also called for unity, noting the response inside the venue brought people together across political lines.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to examine the suspect’s background, potential motives, and any prior warnings that may have been issued before the attack.
