On Friday, acting Attorney General Blanche cleared a major hurdle in his confirmation process, gaining support from GOP Sen. Bill Cassidy.

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted Tuesday, 12-10 along party lines to advance his nomination to lead the Department of Justice.

President Donald Trump nominated Blanche to succeed Pam Bondi, who was fired by the president following criticism over her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files.

While waiting for his confirmation hearing, Blanche has served as acting attorney general since Bondi’s departure.

The committee vote came after Blanche reached an agreement with Republican holdouts.

He signed an order rescinding a nearly $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund that had drawn criticism from some GOP senators. This move secured the support needed to advance the nomination.

Blanche’s road to Attorney General has been met with some opposition, most notably from Sen. Lisa Murkowski. The Alaskan senator has cited concerns regarding Blanche’s nomination, saying he would not keep President Trump’s “impulses” in check.

“The country needs an Attorney General who will check the worst impulses of this administration,” Murkowski said.

The nomination now heads to the full Senate for a confirmation vote. No date has been set for the floor vote.
