Elon Musk took another shot at Instagram this week, responding to a post from Geiger Capital that criticized the platform by simply writing, “Instagram is for girls.”
Instagram is for girls
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 1, 2026
The remark came after Geiger Capital said it had deleted Instagram and questioned the value of the platform, describing it as primarily geared toward women. Musk offered no detailed explanation for his criticism, instead using the brief response to endorse the decision to leave the Meta-owned service.
Instagram is built heavily around photos, short-form videos, influencers and lifestyle content, while Musk's X has developed a stronger reputation for public discussions involving politics, breaking news and direct interactions between users and public figures.
Musk's comment also carries additional weight because of his long-running rivalry with Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg's Meta owns Instagram, Facebook and Threads, while Musk owns X, putting the two technology executives in direct competition for users, advertisers and online influence.
The two billionaires have repeatedly traded jabs over their competing businesses and have previously discussed, and at one point attempted to arrange, a highly publicized cage fight.
Instagram's audience extends well beyond the demographic referenced by Musk. Businesses, celebrities, athletes, creators and political figures all use the platform to promote content and communicate with followers. Nevertheless, Musk's comment tapped into the perception that Instagram's culture is particularly focused on fashion, beauty, lifestyle and personal presentation.
The brief exchange quickly attracted attention because of Musk's prominent role in the social-media industry and his ownership of a direct competitor. Rather than issuing a corporate criticism of Instagram, Musk delivered his assessment in four words, giving the post a characteristically blunt edge.
The remark does not provide a detailed argument against Instagram or explain why Musk believes users should prefer X. It does, however, underscore the increasingly personal competition between Musk and Meta as both platforms compete for users and influence in an increasingly crowded social-media market.
