Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have moved their children to a new school in the United Kingdom just two days after the start of the academic term, citing security concerns with the original school run.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced the change through a spokesperson on Monday, September 14. Prince Archie, aged seven, and Princess Lilibet, aged five, began classes at the first school earlier this month following the family's return to Britain in late August after six years in California. The couple's private security team determined that the distance from their home and heavy traffic on the route made maintaining a secure convoy impractical.
"The decision for the children to move school was taken following a discussion with the family's security team about the practicalities of their current arrangements," the spokesperson said. "The parents remain extremely grateful to all the teachers and staff for the love, care and effort they have shown their family. This decision should in no way be interpreted as a reflection on the school or the exceptional care the children have received there."
Sources close to the couple reported that the children enjoyed their initial two days, meeting classmates and settling in. However, the logistics of the commute strained the small private security detail, with vehicles struggling to stay together in traffic. The family has since visited another local school for a taster session, and the children started their first full day at the new school on Tuesday.
The school switch occurs as the Sussexes undergo a new security review by UK authorities. The Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures, known as Ravec, has initiated a risk assessment now that the family resides full-time in Britain rather than visiting. This review will evaluate threats and potential protection levels for Harry, Meghan, and their children.
The locations of the family's home and both schools remain private. The couple has worked with regulators to limit media disclosure of their address. Meghan shared images on Instagram over the weekend showing the family in the English countryside.
