Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton holds a narrow lead over Democratic state Rep. James Talarico in a new poll from The Trafalgar Group, adding another close result to an increasingly competitive race for the state's open U.S. Senate seat.
The survey, conducted October 31 through November 1 among 1,089 respondents, found Paxton receiving 48.1% support compared with 47.5% for Talarico, giving the Republican a 0.6-point advantage.
Libertarian candidate Ted Brown received 2.4%, while another 2% of respondents remained undecided. The results suggest that the contest could come down to a relatively small number of voters as Texans prepare to head to the polls Tuesday.
The latest findings also represent a shift from The Trafalgar Group's previous Texas Senate survey, conducted October 6-8, which showed Talarico leading Paxton by approximately three percentage points. The new numbers place Paxton narrowly ahead as the campaign enters its final stretch.
Paxton secured the Republican nomination after defeating incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in the GOP runoff, while Talarico emerged as the Democratic nominee after defeating U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the primary. The November contest will determine who succeeds Cornyn in the Senate.
The race has attracted significant national attention, with Republicans seeking to retain a Senate seat in a state that has remained firmly Republican in presidential elections but has seen increasingly competitive statewide contests. Democrats are hoping Talarico can capitalize on the political environment and build enough support among independent and suburban voters to overcome the state's Republican advantage.
With Paxton and Talarico separated by less than one percentage point in the latest Trafalgar survey, the final days of campaigning could prove decisive. The poll does not establish a clear advantage for either candidate, and the remaining undecided voters could play an important role in the outcome.
