Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) was hospitalized Saturday after suffering a stroke while attending his son’s hockey game, his office announced Sunday, November 1.

Murphy, 53, began experiencing numbness in his arm during the game Saturday afternoon. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors determined he had suffered a stroke. He was subsequently transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital for further monitoring and treatment.

Allison Herwitt, Murphy’s chief of staff, confirmed the hospitalization in a statement, saying the senator was responding well to treatment. “The doctors are encouraged by his progress; he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” Herwitt said.

Murphy’s office has not released additional details about the severity of the stroke or how long the senator is expected to remain hospitalized.

The hospitalization comes as Murphy has been traveling around the country campaigning for Democratic candidates ahead of the November midterm elections. His recent stops included Michigan, Minnesota, Florida and North Carolina. The senator had been scheduled to appear Sunday in New Hampshire alongside Democratic congressional candidates, including Rep. Chris Pappas, who is running for the U.S. Senate, and Stefany Shaheen, who is seeking a seat in the House. Those appearances are now affected by his hospitalization.

Murphy has served in the U.S. Senate since 2013 after previously representing Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District in the House. He has also been mentioned as a potential contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination.

His office says the focus remains on his recovery, with doctors encouraged by his progress following the stroke.
