A Learjet 60 carrying nine people crashed in a residential area of Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday afternoon, killing everyone on board.

The aircraft went down around 12:50 p.m. ET near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North in the Greenacres and Cresthaven area. Videos and flight data showed the jet entering a steep, rapid descent before striking the ground and erupting in flames.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the deaths in a statement on X, describing the incident as a "horrific tragedy." The plane had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas earlier that day and was bound for North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Flight tracking data indicated the jet descended approximately 27,000 feet in about one minute before contact was lost. The pilot reportedly radioed a mayday call citing an overspeed condition and extreme descent rates.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, with support from the FAA. Officials have not released the names of those on board or details on possible causes, such as weather or mechanical issues.

The crash site affected a mobile home neighborhood, with reports of fires, debris, and a crater in the ground. Roads in the area were closed, and some residents required temporary shelter. No fatalities or serious injuries on the ground have been confirmed.

This marks one of the deadliest aviation accidents in the United States this year. The privately operated Learjet 60, registered as N722BD, was en route over South Florida when the incident occurred.
