Martha Stewart is facing backlash after sharing a Halloween costume photo that appeared to depict her as a homeless person, prompting criticism that the longtime television personality was making light of people struggling with poverty.
Stewart, 85, posted the image Saturday, October 31, as part of an Instagram photo carousel promoting her QVC candle collection. In the photograph, she wore ripped clothing, had what appeared to be dirt smeared across her face, and held a sign reading, "I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!"
The post included the caption, "My QVC candles are perfect for Halloween!!!"
The photograph quickly circulated online, with critics accusing Stewart of turning homelessness into a Halloween costume and arguing that the portrayal was insensitive to Americans experiencing poverty. The image was subsequently deleted from her Instagram post, although screenshots had already spread across social media.
Following the backlash, Stewart addressed the controversy in a statement to Page Six, explaining that the costume was intended to draw attention to homelessness rather than mock those experiencing it.
"I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention," Stewart said.
She continued by emphasizing that homelessness remains a serious national issue and pointed to her involvement with charitable organizations.
"Homelessness continues to remain one of America's greatest challenges and ongoing crises, something that I care deeply about and I have spent a significant amount of time and effort supporting charities that combat this ongoing social epidemic."
Stewart added that she remained committed to supporting efforts to address homelessness and helping organizations working to combat the crisis.
The controversy comes despite Stewart's longstanding reputation for elaborate Halloween costumes and holiday celebrations. She has frequently shared elaborate seasonal decorations, recipes, and costume ideas with her followers over the years.
Her latest costume, however, has drawn a different kind of attention, with the deleted photograph and subsequent explanation placing the focus on how homelessness is portrayed and whether the attempt to raise awareness crossed a line for those who found it offensive.
