One person was killed and six others were injured in a targeted shooting at a Spirit Halloween store in Fairfield, California, late Friday night.
Fairfield police responded to reports of gunfire at the Solano Town Center shopping mall around 8:30 p.m. Friday. Officers found seven people with gunshot wounds inside the store. One victim died at the scene, while the other six were transported to local hospitals, with at least three in critical condition, according to Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall.
Police described the incident as a targeted attack involving a single suspect who fled before officers arrived. A manhunt is underway, and authorities have not made any arrests. The Fairfield Police Department said detectives are reviewing evidence, including video footage, to identify the individual responsible. The FBI's Sacramento field office deployed an evidence response team to assist with the investigation.
The shooting occurred on the eve of Halloween as shoppers, including families, were making last-minute purchases inside the store, which was located in a former Best Buy space at the mall. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots, with one account describing five loud bangs. Several people escaped through an emergency exit.
No information has been released about the victims' identities or possible motive. Police have stated there is no ongoing threat to the public. Spirit Halloween said it is cooperating with law enforcement.
The incident took place about 45 miles northeast of San Francisco. Officers remained at the scene into Saturday morning as the investigation continued. Mall management closed the affected area and increased security measures throughout the property in the hours following the shooting. Local residents expressed shock at the violence occurring in a popular seasonal retail spot during a busy shopping period.
Authorities encouraged anyone with information or video evidence to contact the Fairfield Police Department tip line immediately. The investigation remains active with multiple agencies involved in processing the scene and pursuing leads.
