The Pentagon has intensified its focus on space as a contested domain, building on recent announcements and doctrinal developments to enhance warfighting readiness in orbit. In September, Air Force Secretary Troy Meink publicly confirmed that the U.S. Space Force operates on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending joint forces against adversary actions, marking the clearest acknowledgment to date of deployed capabilities in space.
This disclosure followed the Space Force's first major live-fly maneuver warfare exercise, Apollo Maneuvers 2026, which tested coordinated operations across multiple orbital regimes. U.S. Space Command has prioritized integrated space fires and countering proliferated low Earth orbit constellations as top requirements for the coming years.
The service continues to implement its Space Warfighting Framework, released in 2025, which emphasizes space superiority through offensive and defensive counterspace operations. Funding requests for fiscal year 2027 exceed $71 billion to expand combat units and personnel under Combat Forces Command.
These steps reflect a broader shift toward treating space as a warfighting domain, with officials stressing the need to deter aggression from peer competitors while protecting critical satellite infrastructure that supports U.S. and allied operations worldwide.
