President Donald Trump said Saturday that a contract worth more than $50 million secured by his former lawyer Alina Habba Mildon was unacceptable.
"I thought it was totally obnoxious and outrageous, and it's not acceptable," Trump told reporters at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. "Not acceptable at all."
Trump added that he told Habba Mildon he did not want her to be paid and called the episode "terrible."
The comments followed a New York Times report last week detailing the contract between Habba Mildon and the family of Venezuelan banker Julio Herrera Velutini. The family guaranteed her more than $50 million over four years through their company Concord Partners, paying $10 million annually plus bonuses.
Habba Mildon was serving as acting U.S. attorney in New Jersey when she signed the contract in late October 2025. A court later disqualified her from the role. She resigned on December 8, 2025, and was appointed a senior adviser to the attorney general the same day. She began work at Concord on January 1, 2026.
Trump pardoned Herrera on January 15, 2026, after the banker had faced U.S. felony bribery charges and reached a plea deal in August 2025. Herrera's daughter, a U.S. citizen, had contributed $3.5 million to a Trump-connected super PAC.
Habba Mildon has denied any connection between her employment and the pardon. In a statement last week, she said any insinuation that her work had anything to do with securing a pardon was false and noted that her employment had been vetted and disclosed to the Department of Justice.
Trump reportedly told aides and allies that Habba Mildon should donate a portion of the money to his future presidential library or another Trump-affiliated entity. He also indicated to at least one ally that the Herrera family should not pay the remainder of the contract.
The episode has drawn scrutiny over potential conflicts of interest involving former Trump associates and post-administration arrangements with individuals who received presidential clemency.
