Texas Republican Congressman Brandon Gill opened his appearance at the Republican National Convention by turning the tables on Democrats.

"Now, I think it's only appropriate that we kick this convention off properly with a land acknowledgement," Gill said, mocking the frequent use of land acknowledgments from left-leaning political organizations and candidates.

The freshman lawmaker used the moment to highlight what he and other conservatives view as the empty and divisive nature of such statements. Land acknowledgments, which typically recognize Native American tribes as the original inhabitants of an area, have become a staple at Democratic events and in some corporate and academic settings.

Gill and other Republicans argue that these declarations accomplish nothing substantive while promoting a narrative of perpetual grievance and victimhood while ignoring the complex history of land ownership across all civilizations.

The convention setting amplified the contrast with recent Democratic gatherings that have featured similar acknowledgments. Gill's approach drew applause from the audience, underscoring Republican resistance to what they see as performative identity politics.

Gill, who represents Texas's 26th District, has previously criticized land acknowledgments on social media, describing them as signs of civilizational decline when practiced by institutions like the British monarchy.

The RNC continues with a focus on border security, economic growth, and cultural issues central to the Republican platform as November elections approach.
