Joseph Savarino, 26, the grandson of former Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal driving while impaired crash that killed a 15-year-old boy in Durham, North Carolina, on Saturday evening.
Police said Savarino was driving a Ford Explorer when it struck Jack O’Shea, who was riding an e-bike near the intersection of Cole Mill Road and Wyndham Lane. Officers responded to the scene shortly before 9 p.m., where the teenager was pronounced dead.
According to court and police records cited by local outlets, Savarino’s breath test showed a blood alcohol content of 0.11 when administered after the crash. Investigators also reported that he admitted to drinking earlier in the evening before getting behind the wheel.
Savarino was taken into custody and held at the Durham County Detention Center on a $100,000 secured bond. Records indicate he has since been released after posting bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 20.
The victim’s family confirmed Jack O’Shea’s death in a Facebook post, describing his final day as one spent attending church, playing baseball, and riding bikes with friends. His mother said the family is leaning on their faith as they mourn his loss.
The incident has drawn renewed attention due to Savarino’s family connection to Krzyzewski, who coached at Duke for decades before retiring in 2022. Reports also note that Savarino’s brother previously pleaded guilty to a separate DWI offense in 2022.
