President Donald Trump addressed reporters at the White House late Saturday after a shooting near the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner prompted the evacuation of top U.S. officials from the Washington Hilton.
Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. Officials said he was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives when he approached a Secret Service checkpoint outside the venue.
According to Trump, the suspect fired at close range at a United States Secret Service agent, striking the agent’s protective vest. The agent was not seriously injured and is expected to recover.
“He was shot from very close distance with a very powerful gun, and the vest did the job,” Trump said.
Law enforcement officials said agents returned fire and quickly subdued the suspect before he could enter the main event space, where thousands of attendees had gathered. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for evaluation.
Interim police chief Jeffery Carroll said investigators currently believe the suspect acted alone and that there is no indication of additional individuals involved. Authorities have not yet determined a motive, though the president's rare appearance at the event makes him a likely target.
Jeanine Pirro said the suspect faces preliminary federal charges, including use of a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon. She indicated additional charges are likely as the investigation develops, with an initial court appearance expected Monday.
Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots before security forces rushed the area, prompting guests inside the ballroom to take cover. One witness reported seeing the suspect moving near a security checkpoint area shortly before the shooting.
Trump later described the attacker as a “lone wolf” and said the individual is in custody and being questioned by investigators.
The incident occurred just before the president was scheduled to speak at the annual dinner, which draws journalists, government officials, and public figures. The venue was secured by law enforcement, with a heavy police presence and restricted access as authorities conducted a full sweep.
The shooting adds to a series of recent security incidents involving the president and is under active federal investigation. Officials emphasized that the rapid response by security personnel prevented the suspect from reaching the main gathering area and potentially causing greater harm.
