Hunter Biden is preparing to launch a cryptocurrency named after the laptop that became a major focus of political controversy and congressional investigations into his business dealings and those of his family.

The token, which will trade under the ticker $LAPTOP, is scheduled to launch Wednesday, Sept. 9, on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 blockchain developed by Coinbase. The Wall Street Journal first reported the plans, citing people familiar with the project. Hunter Biden also confirmed the launch date in a post Monday.

The name refers to the laptop that Biden left at a Delaware repair shop before its contents became public during the 2020 presidential campaign. Republicans subsequently highlighted emails and other materials from the device during congressional investigations into Hunter Biden’s foreign business activities and questions surrounding his family’s involvement.

The project is expected to issue 1 billion tokens. According to the Journal, Hunter Biden and other founders will initially control 30% of the supply, with those tokens subject to a six-month lockup and a two-year vesting schedule. Another portion of the supply is planned for airdrops, including distributions to some people who lost money on President Donald Trump’s $TRUMP cryptocurrency.

The cryptocurrency also includes a planned mechanism that could result in up to 30% of the token supply being destroyed depending on certain future events, according to reporting on the project. Those conditions reportedly include developments involving Bitcoin and the 2028 presidential election.

The launch comes as cryptocurrencies connected to prominent political figures have become increasingly visible. President Trump and members of his family have also been involved in digital-asset ventures, including the $TRUMP token.

Meme coins generally do not represent ownership in an underlying company or asset and can experience significant price volatility. Several unofficial tokens using the LAPTOP name or ticker have already appeared on other blockchain networks, making it important to distinguish the planned Base launch from copycat projects.
