Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday that he recently underwent treatment for prostate cancer, marking his first public disclosure of a cancer diagnosis during his time in office.
Netanyahu, 76, revealed the condition while releasing details from his annual medical examination. According to statements from his office, doctors identified a malignant tumor measuring less than one centimeter during a follow-up check after a prostate procedure conducted in December 2024.
Medical letters released alongside the announcement indicated the cancer was detected at an early stage and had not spread. Physicians described the finding as a small lesion with no evidence of metastasis based on comprehensive testing.
A person familiar with the matter said the diagnosis occurred several months ago, and Netanyahu subsequently underwent targeted radiation therapy. He said the treatment has been completed and that the tumor is no longer detectable.
Netanyahu characterized the condition as a minor medical issue that has been fully addressed, adding that he is in good health following the course of treatment.
The Prime Minister’s Office had previously disclosed the December procedure as treatment for an enlarged prostate, but did not at that time indicate the presence of cancer.
Netanyahu also said he delayed the release of his medical report by roughly two months, citing concerns that the information could be used for political messaging by Iran.
The disclosure comes as Netanyahu continues to lead Israel during a period of ongoing regional tensions and security challenges.
