Democratic Ohio gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton was targeted by an armed individual while attending the Canfield Fair in Mahoning County on Sunday, according to her campaign.

Acton was at a campaign tent at the fair when the individual reportedly lunged toward her. Several campaign volunteers were knocked to the ground during the incident, according to Chris Anderson, chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party.

The suspect was armed with multiple weapons and was taken into custody by law enforcement, Anderson said. The Ohio State Highway Patrol also provided security for Acton during the incident.

Acton's campaign said that she and her husband, Eric, were grateful for the quick response from law enforcement and were praying for those who were injured. The campaign statement did not initially provide additional details about the extent of the injuries.

“While attending the Canfield Fair, an armed individual lunged at Dr. Acton, injuring multiple people,” the campaign said. “Dr. Acton and Eric are grateful for the swift and decisive action of law enforcement and are praying for the recovery of those injured.”

Anderson condemned the incident and credited local law enforcement and the Ohio State Highway Patrol for their response.

“What happened at our tent today during today's visit from Dr. Acton is reprehensible and should be condemned by leaders on all sides of the aisle,” Anderson said.

The incident took place as the Canfield Fair, a major annual event in Mahoning County, continued its six-day run over Labor Day weekend. The fair is scheduled to conclude Monday.

Authorities have not yet released additional details about the suspect, the weapons involved, or the circumstances that led to the confrontation. The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine exactly what happened.

Local reporting has indicated that Acton was not injured in the incident, although officials had not initially provided a detailed account of her condition.
