Steak 'n Shake announced that starting June 1, all its Steakburgers will feature 100% grass-fed, grass-finished beef. The move comes as the Indianapolis-based fast-food chain aligns with the Make America Healthy Again initiative through its newly appointed Chief MAHA Officer, Michael Boes.
Boes, a former senior advisor at the Department of Health and Human Services under Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., confirmed the chain-wide switch in interviews. "There are a lot of [health] benefits... but the reality is we think it tastes better," Boes said, noting customer tests in local markets supported the change. He emphasized returning fast food to its "real, simple and delicious" roots, challenging the industry's hesitation about healthier ingredients.
This builds on recent reforms at Steak 'n Shake. The company shifted fries, tater tots, onion rings, and chicken tenders to 100% beef tallow cooking earlier this year, eliminating seed oils. It also introduced 100% Wisconsin butter, cane sugar Coca-Cola options, and A2 milk products. Broader efforts target removing seed oils entirely and traditional cooking methods by ditching microwaves.
Founded in 1934 by Gus Belt in Normal, Illinois, Steak 'n Shake pioneered the Steakburger, ground from steak for superior flavor. The chain, known for steakburgers and milkshakes, operates about 391 locations across the United States as of early 2026.
The announcement ties into the Trump administration's health priorities. Kennedy praised the switch to beef tallow during a March 2025 visit to a Florida location, advocating for transparency and real food. President Trump shared the company's post on X, calling it "Awesome." Boes received Kennedy's approval for the MAHA role.
Grass-fed, grass-finished beef means cattle eat grass throughout their lives, potentially offering health benefits and better taste, per Boes. Pricing details remain unclear amid rising beef costs from global supply issues. Customers can expect the upgrade at all outlets by June 1.
