President Donald Trump called on ABC and its parent company Disney on Monday to fire late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, arguing that the comedian’s recent remarks crossed a line and contributed to a climate of hostility toward political figures.
The call comes days after a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner at the Washington Hilton, where an armed suspect opened fire near a security checkpoint, injuring a Secret Service agent before being taken into custody. The incident prompted evacuations of President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and other officials attending the event.
The dispute centers in part on comments Kimmel made during a monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, before the gala, he referred to Melania Trump as an “expectant widow” during a segment that also included criticism of the president. Trump said those remarks were “beyond the pale” and characterized them as encouraging hostility.
In public statements, Trump said Kimmel should be “fired immediately,” framing the issue as part of a broader concern about media rhetoric and its potential impact on political violence. The First Lady also criticized Kimmel, describing his comments as “hateful and violent” and urging ABC to take action.

The confrontation adds to a long-running dispute between Trump and Kimmel, who has frequently mocked the president on his program, while Trump has repeatedly criticized the host publicly and on social media.
The controversy also follows previous backlash against Kimmel over other politically charged remarks, which at times have prompted calls for disciplinary action from affiliates and advertisers.
ABC has not announced any disciplinary measures in response to the latest controversy.
