Artificial intelligence companies have directed tens of millions of dollars through super PACs to influence the 2026 midterm elections.
A New York Times analysis of federal campaign finance data found that political groups tied to OpenAI and Anthropic spent $55.7 million on advertising and voter outreach in key races. The bulk of the activity occurred in primaries rather than general election contests, with $52.6 million directed at safe seats that feature intense intraparty competition.
The OpenAI-aligned Leading the Future network and the Anthropic-aligned Public First Action accounted for most of the spending. Leading the Future supports a lighter regulatory approach, while Public First Action backs stronger safeguards. The groups funneled money through separate Republican and Democratic committees, with heavier outlays overall favoring Democratic candidates.
Spending has largely avoided direct mentions of artificial intelligence in the 95 ads reviewed. Industry backers appear motivated by looming federal regulation and growing public concerns over data centers and safety. In one prominent example, rival AI interests poured millions into New York's 12th Congressional District primary after state lawmaker Alex Bores sponsored AI regulation legislation.
These efforts unfold amid ongoing debate over AI’s role and the ethical duty of industry leaders. With roughly one month remaining until the November elections, the groups have made limited moves into competitive general election races. American Mission, part of the Leading the Future network, spent about $500,000 each supporting three Republican Senate candidates in less competitive contests. Think Big, the Democratic arm, directed nearly $300,000 toward several House candidates.
The activity reflects broader efforts by technology interests to secure favorable policymakers ahead of potential congressional action on AI oversight. Total tracked independent expenditures by AI-linked groups have reached over $60 million in some tallies.
