Former Vice President Kamala Harris has not launched a campaign for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination and has given few indications that she is preparing to do so, even as she continues to consider another White House run. CNN reported Thursday that Harris is focusing on the 2026 midterm elections while keeping her options open for 2028.

Harris has been making calls to Democratic candidates and activists and is planning several campaign appearances this fall. Her schedule includes a stop in Michigan with Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, an appearance in Nevada with Attorney General Aaron Ford, who is running for governor, and a Georgia event with Sen. Jon Ossoff.

At the same time, Harris has not begun the type of public policy rollout or campaign organization typically associated with a presidential launch. She has also not given potential Democratic contenders a clear indication of whether she intends to enter the race.

Harris said recently that the midterm elections are currently occupying her attention, describing helping Democratic candidates and voters as her focus. She has previously said she is still considering whether to seek the presidency again.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, another potential Democrat contender in 2028, said he would not run if Harris entered the race. Other Democrats considering presidential campaigns have indicated they will make their own decisions rather than wait indefinitely for Harris.

Former Democratic National Committee Chair Donna Brazile, an informal Harris adviser, has suggested there is no immediate deadline for Harris to decide and that the question of her political future could be addressed after the November 3 midterm elections.
