Ashley Hinson, Republican congresswoman and the party's nominee for U.S Senate, is calling on President Donald Trump to bring the war in Iran to an immediate end while urging the federal government to take steps to reduce the impact of high fuel prices on Iowans.

“The war needs to be brought to a successful and immediate end,” Hinson said in a post on X, continuing on to say that she will work with members of either party to deliver results for the state. "Iowans are being squeezed and shouldn’t have to foot the bill at the pump or the checkout line for the war in Iran."

Hinson proposed several measures she said could provide immediate relief, including suspending the federal gas tax, pausing diesel exports, expanding access to E-15 ethanol, reinstating the $1-per-gallon biodiesel tax credit and creating a diesel relief program for farmers and truckers facing higher operating costs.

She also called for replenishing the Highway Trust Fund while pursuing short-term fuel relief, saying Iowans should not face deteriorating roads and bridges as a result of efforts to reduce prices.

The call comes as U.S. diesel prices have reached record levels amid global supply disruptions tied to the Iran and Ukraine conflicts. Reuters reported that U.S. diesel prices surpassed $6 per gallon in September, while inventories remained below seasonal averages.

Hinson said the measures are needed “ASAP” and pledged to work across party lines to address the costs facing Iowa families, farmers and truckers.

Hinson is running for Iowa’s open U.S. Senate seat following the retirement of two-term Republican Sen. Joni Ernst. She will face Democrat state Rep. Joshua Turek in the general election on November 3. The state has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 2008.

Her campaign describes Hinson as working with Trump, who won Iowa in 2024 by 13 points and has endorsed her in the race, on issues including economic policy, affordability, and other priorities for Iowans.
