Republican Mike Rogers, the GOP nominee for U.S. Senate in Michigan, is calling for an end to the war in Iran while urging the federal government to temporarily halt diesel exports as fuel prices continue to rise.

“The war in Iran needs to end to bring costs down, but Michigan families can’t afford to wait,” Rogers said Monday. “Here’s what we can do now: place a temporary embargo on Diesel exports. American energy should provide relief to American families first.”

Rogers’ proposal comes as gasoline and diesel prices have climbed sharply in Michigan. AAA Michigan reported last week that regular gasoline had surpassed $4.75 per gallon, while diesel reached $6.54 per gallon, up more than 60 cents in a week.

The former congressman has also called for suspending Michigan’s state and the federal gas taxes to provide consumers with additional relief at the pump. His latest proposal would target diesel exports specifically, an issue that has gained attention among Republican lawmakers and candidates as fuel costs rise.

The debate over diesel exports comes as farmers, truckers and other businesses face higher fuel expenses. Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Sen. Chuck Grassley have also discussed or supported measures to restrict diesel exports, although the Trump administration has not embraced an export ban. Energy analysts and oil industry officials have warned that restricting exports could have unintended effects on domestic fuel supplies and prices.

Rogers is running against Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat in November. The contest is among the closely watched Senate races of the 2026 election cycle.
