Ottawa's city council voted unanimously Wednesday to begin the process of renaming Trump Avenue, a residential street in the Central Park neighborhood.

The motion, introduced by River Ward Councilor Riley Brockington, directs the formation of a working group with three to five residents of the street to propose a new name. The new name will go before council for final approval in the first half of 2027.

Trump Avenue, home to about 65 residences, was named more than 20 years ago as part of a New York City-themed development that includes streets such as Bloomingdale Street, Staten Way, and Manhattan Crescent. At the time, Donald Trump was known primarily as a real estate developer.

Brockington said the change responds to what he described as the president's attacks on Canadian sovereignty and economic policies. The vote occurred hours after renewed U.S. criticisms of Canadian immigration policies.

A previous effort to rename the street in 2021 ended in a tie among residents who responded, with many citing the inconvenience of address changes. Some current residents have expressed support for the latest move.

The decision follows months of bilateral friction, including U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, Canadian retaliatory tariffs, and a U.S. executive order directing federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as Lake America.

Council members indicated the new name could retain the neighborhood's New York theme or adopt a different one, subject to city naming policies and resident input.
