Russian drone and missile strikes killed at least eight civilians in Ukraine overnight into Thursday, officials reported, as the nearly four-and-a-half-year invasion continues despite diplomatic discussions at the United Nations General Assembly.

In the northeastern Kharkiv region, a strike hit a vegetable sorting facility on a farm in Stara Hnylytsia, killing six agricultural workers and wounding 12 others. Interior Minister Ihor Vyhivskyi confirmed the deaths occurred while workers sorted produce.

In the capital Kyiv, two people died: a woman walking to a shelter and a man in an underground pedestrian crossing. Eight others were wounded, including a police officer. The attacks damaged more than 50 civilian sites, including apartment blocks, post offices, a maternity hospital, and a textile plant. No patients or staff at the hospital were injured.

Ukraine's air force reported intercepting 220 of 282 drones and seven missiles launched by Russia. Russian officials stated the strikes targeted arms factories, telecommunications, and logistical facilities in Kyiv and the Odesa region.

Attacks also struck Odesa, damaging a shopping center and other infrastructure. The barrage followed statements from both sides at the UN, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for sanctions to cut Russian revenues and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urged pressure on Moscow alongside support for Ukraine's defense.

The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission noted that civilian casualties in Ukraine have risen sharply in 2026, with more deaths and injuries in the first eight months than in all of 2025. Russian attacks in August alone killed at least 368 civilians and wounded 2,314 others.

Russia's Defense Ministry maintained the strikes focused on military-related targets. Ukrainian authorities described the attacks as terror against civilians, with air raid alerts active across multiple regions into Thursday.
