South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has withdrawn from public engagements after becoming ill following his return from the BRICS summit in India, his office announced Wednesday. Ramaphosa returned to South Africa Monday and has been advised by his medical team to rest and recover.

The Presidency did not disclose the nature or severity of Ramaphosa’s illness. It said that, where possible, Ramaphosa has asked government ministers to represent him at scheduled engagements while he recovers.

Ramaphosa’s illness comes shortly after the BRICS summit in New Delhi, where he joined leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two-day summit concluded Sunday after discussions covering international economic issues and geopolitical developments.

At the same time, unconfirmed reports circulating online claim that Xi suffered a medical emergency during the summit and was subsequently flown back to China for treatment. The claim was made by Wanjun Xie, chairman of the China Democracy Party, but it has not been independently verified, and no official Chinese statement has confirmed that Xi suffered a stroke or other serious medical incident.

The simultaneous health-related developments have drawn attention because both leaders had been participating in the BRICS summit only days earlier. Ramaphosa’s absence is official, while reports concerning Xi’s health remain unconfirmed
