President Donald Trump announced Monday that the United States is working on a potential agreement to purchase potash from Belarus at a price he said would be substantially below what the country currently pays Canada.
“The United States is working on a massive Deal with respect to the purchase of Potash from Belarus,” Trump wrote. “The pricing would be for substantially less than we are currently paying to Canada, very good news for our Farmers and Ranchers.”
Potash is a key ingredient in fertilizer used by farmers to replenish soil nutrients and support crop production. Canada is one of the world's leading potash producers and exporters, making it a major supplier to global agricultural markets.
Trump's announcement comes amid heightened trade tensions between the United States and Canada. The administration has imposed additional tariffs and restrictions on certain Canadian products following what the White House has described as discriminatory Canadian trade measures.
The potential Belarus agreement would also mark another development in the administration's recent efforts to improve relations with Belarus. U.S. envoy John Coale has negotiated with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko over the release of political prisoners, with Washington recently easing some sanctions on Belarusian companies following the release of additional prisoners.
Trump did not provide details on the potential size, timing, or final terms of the potash agreement. The announcement described the arrangement as a deal the United States is working on, meaning a final agreement has not yet been announced.
