President Donald Trump said Thursday that the United States is moving toward establishing a permanent U.S. Army base in Poland, with the location potentially announced soon. Trump credited Polish President Karol Nawrocki with helping advance the effort as the two countries work to expand their military cooperation.

In a post on Truth Social, President Trump said: "GREAT NEWS! Thanks to the bold leadership of my friend, Karol Nawrocki, President of Poland, major progress is being made toward establishing a U.S. Army base in Poland. If this happens, the location will be announced very soon. This will be a historic step for our Great U.S./Polish Alliance. Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP"

Poland has been seeking a permanent American military presence for years, and its government formally approved steps in June to prepare for the creation of a permanent U.S. base. The proposal includes consultations with Washington and planning for the infrastructure, logistics and financial arrangements needed to support American forces.

Nawrocki has made a larger U.S. military presence a major security priority for Poland. During his meetings with Trump, the two presidents have discussed Polish-American defense cooperation and the continued presence of U.S. troops in Poland. Trump previously announced plans to send an additional 5,000 American troops to the country.

The potential base would expand an American military presence that already includes rotational and permanent U.S. personnel at several Polish locations. Existing U.S. facilities include Army installations and support operations in places such as Poznań and Powidz.

The proposal comes as Poland faces heightened security concerns along NATO’s eastern flank because of Russia’s war against Ukraine. Polish officials have also warned of possible Russian provocations and recently strengthened security along portions of the country’s border with Ukraine.

U.S. and Polish officials were still holding talks on the details of an expanded American presence as of September 10, including infrastructure and the conditions for stationing additional U.S. forces. The location of a permanent base has not yet been publicly finalized.
