President Donald Trump called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Sunday to halt Ukrainian strikes against Russia’s diesel fuel infrastructure, saying the attacks are contributing to a shortage that is affecting fuel supplies.

Trump made the comments while speaking with reporters at the Irish Open at his Doonbeg golf club in Ireland. Asked whether he had spoken with Zelenskyy following his recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump instead issued a direct call for Ukraine to stop targeting Russian diesel facilities.

“Mr. Zelenskyy has to do one thing. He has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia,” Trump said. “Let him go after targets but not diesel fuel, because he’s causing a shortage of diesel fuel.”

Ukraine has carried out a sustained campaign of long-range drone strikes against Russia’s oil and gas industry. Kyiv has argued that Russia’s energy infrastructure is a legitimate military target because the industry helps finance and support Moscow’s war effort.

The attacks have contributed to disruptions in Russia’s domestic fuel supply, with fuel rationing reported in parts of the country. Russia is also a major oil and gas exporter, making disruptions to its refining capacity potentially significant for broader fuel markets. Reuters reported that Russian fuel production has declined amid the Ukrainian strikes and that Moscow has reduced its forecasts for oil production and fuel exports.

Trump’s comments came as Russia and Ukraine exchanged another round of large-scale drone attacks. Ukrainian officials reported Russian strikes across the country, including attacks on Odesa and western Ukraine near the Polish border. Russian officials, meanwhile, said their air defenses intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones overnight.

Two people were killed and 14 injured near Nizhnekamsk in Russia’s Tatarstan region, according to local officials. The area contains major oil refineries and petrochemical facilities. Ukraine also claimed it struck an oil refinery in Sloviansk-on-Kuban, although Russian officials did not directly confirm the Ukrainian account.

The latest exchange of strikes comes as the Trump administration continues diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Sunday that Moscow is open to another round of talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States, potentially as soon as October. Recent meetings involving U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, Putin, and Zelenskyy have not resolved the major disagreements between Moscow and Kyiv, particularly over territory.
