President Donald Trump announced Sunday that his proposed triumphal arch in Washington will function as a dual-use military complex equipped with drones, snipers, and ammunition storage.
In a Truth Social post, Trump stated that he agreed to the conversion at the strong request of the United States Military and for national security purposes. The 250-foot structure, planned for Memorial Circle adjoining the Arlington Memorial Bridge, will house and store large numbers of drones while allowing rapid deployment. Snipers will be positioned on the roof and plaza areas, with large quantities of sniper ammunition kept in storage, according to the post.
Trump described the facility as one that will have no equal anywhere in the world. The project, which the administration has tied to America's 250th anniversary, aims to provide a monumental gateway to the capital while addressing security needs.
The announcement builds on earlier descriptions of the arch as a granite-clad monument with galleries, an observation deck, and landscaping. It comes amid ongoing federal reviews by the National Park Service and legal challenges from veterans groups and preservationists concerned about impacts on nearby monuments and views of Arlington National Cemetery.
Trump has framed similar projects, including a new White House ballroom, as serving defensive roles. Construction preparations continue despite opposition, with early approvals from bodies like the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts.
The site lies across the Potomac River from central Washington landmarks, positioning the arch as both a symbolic and practical addition to capital defenses.
