The United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 leaders' summit in Miami this December, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Rubio said the administration hopes Putin will accept the invitation.

“We’ve invited President Putin to the G20,” Rubio told reporters. “We think it’s an opportunity for him to engage not just with the president but with other world leaders. We hope that’s an invitation he’ll accept.”

Rubio's comments came after he met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly. The State Department said the two discussed the Russia-Ukraine war and the broader U.S.-Russia relationship.

Rubio also said that any future meeting between Trump and Putin would require preparation and a clear purpose. A separate Trump-Putin summit has not been formally arranged, although Trump has previously indicated that another meeting could take place.

The G20 summit is scheduled for December in Miami. If Putin attends, it would mark his first in-person participation at a G20 leaders' summit since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.

The invitation comes as the Trump administration continues diplomatic contacts with both Russia and Ukraine while seeking potential avenues for negotiations over the war. Rubio said Wednesday that the United States is also discussing the possibility of limited arrangements involving grain and energy, while acknowledging that such an agreement would not resolve the broader conflict.
