Vice President JD Vance is returning to Iowa Friday to headline a Republican midterm rally in Council Bluffs, where he will campaign for GOP candidates in a state featuring competitive Senate and gubernatorial races.

The rally at the Mid-America Center will include Republican gubernatorial nominee Zach Lahn, who is running against Democratic state Auditor Rob Sand. Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson, the GOP Senate nominee, will not attend because of previously scheduled events, according to her campaign. Hinson is running against Democratic state Rep. Josh Turek for the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Republican Sen. Joni Ernst.

Vance previously traveled to Iowa in May, when he campaigned alongside Rep. Zach Nunn and promoted the Trump administration’s tax and tariff policies during a visit to a steel manufacturing facility. At that event, Vance warned that the 2026 election was “not a normal election” and “not a normal political environment.”

The vice president has emerged as a prominent Republican campaign surrogate ahead of the midterms, traveling to states including Kansas, Wisconsin and Ohio to campaign for GOP candidates and promote the administration’s policies.

Friday’s rally is also taking place in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District, where Republican Rep. Randy Feenstra is leaving the seat after an unsuccessful bid for governor. Republican Chris McGowan and Democrat Dave Dawson are competing for the open House seat.

Vance’s visit comes as Republicans focus on maintaining their congressional majorities while competing in Iowa’s statewide races. The Republican National Committee lists the Council Bluffs event as a midterm rally and has Vance scheduled to speak shortly after noon Friday.
