Sweden's Andreas Almgren won the men's division of the New York City Marathon in his debut over the distance on Sunday, finishing in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 1 second. Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui took the women's title for the second time in three years with a time of 2:24:36.
Almgren, the reigning world half-marathon champion, pulled away from Italy's Yemaneberhan Crippa in the final mile to win by 13 seconds. Kamohelo Mofolo of Lesotho finished third in 2:06:26, just ahead of defending champion Benson Kipruto of Kenya.
Chepkirui broke away from defending champion Hellen Obiri of Kenya in the final 150 meters to secure the victory. American Jess McClain finished second in 2:24:42, edging Obiri by less than a second for third place. McClain's result marked the first U.S. podium finish in the women's race since Shalane Flanagan in 2018.
The 2026 edition marked the 50th running of the five-borough course, which drew more than 60,000 participants. Almgren became the first European man to win the event in three decades and the first Swedish champion in the race's history.
In the wheelchair divisions, Switzerland's Marcel Hug earned his eighth men's title while compatriot Catherine Debrunner won the women's race for the second time.
Several American men posted strong performances, including Zouhair Talbi in sixth place with the fastest time ever by a U.S. runner in the event. The top 10 men's finishers included multiple sub-2:07 times, highlighting the depth of the field.
