Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, has announced his candidacy to become the top Republican on the House Oversight Committee, launching his bid as Republicans prepare for the next Congress.

Gill also announced a new $1.1 million contribution to the National Republican Congressional Committee, along with more than $250,000 previously given in NRCC dues and more than $250,000 contributed to other House Republicans, according to reporting on his announcement. The new contribution brings his recent NRCC support above $1.35 million.

The NRCC is the House Republicans' campaign organization and works to support GOP candidates in House races.

Gill, 32, is serving his first term in Congress and has built a national profile through his questioning of witnesses during Oversight Committee hearings. In May, current Oversight Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., appointed Gill to lead a committee task force focused on constitutional rights and institutional abuses.

Gill is seeking to succeed Comer as the committee's top Republican. Rep. Pat Fallon, R-Texas, has also announced his interest in the position, while several other Republicans have been considering bids.

The House Oversight Committee conducts investigations and exercises oversight of federal agencies and government operations. Whether Republicans retain control of the House in the November midterm elections will determine whether the next GOP leader serves as committee chair or ranking member.
