Two teenagers were killed, and five others were injured in a shooting Monday morning at a park in Winston-Salem, where authorities say a pre-arranged fight escalated into an exchange of gunfire.
Officers were dispatched to Leinbach Park around 9:52 a.m. after receiving reports of a fight in progress. While en route, police were alerted that shots had been fired and multiple people had been struck.
When officers arrived, they encountered individuals fleeing the scene. In the park’s parking lot, police found 17-year-old Erubey Romero Medina suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, 16-year-old Daniel Jimenez Millian, was located farther inside the park and also pronounced dead after suffering a gunshot wound.
Authorities said five additional victims were found nearby in the parking lot along Robinhood Road. Those injured include a 14-year-old girl, a 15-year-old girl, a 17-year-old girl, an 18-year-old man, and a 19-year-old woman. Their injuries range from critical to minor, according to police.
Investigators confirmed that a total of seven individuals were struck by gunfire. Preliminary findings indicate the shooting originated from a planned confrontation involving juveniles, which escalated when multiple individuals began firing weapons.
Police said some of those injured may have also been involved in the gunfire, and detectives are working to determine each person’s role in the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence and identify those responsible.
