An American Airlines flight from Dallas to Newark was diverted to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport on Thursday night after a 67-year-old passenger from Arizona allegedly became violent and used racist and homophobic slurs.

The man, identified as Arthur Lundeen of Tucson, was restrained by fellow passengers using zip ties and duct tape after he allegedly assaulted another passenger and struck a flight attendant. Images from the incident show him secured to his first-class seat with tape wrapped extensively around his body and head.

Passengers Richard Olenick and Juan Mejia, a retired police officer, along with a third man, intervened after Lundeen reportedly choked the passenger next to him and continued to struggle. Flight attendants provided the restraints, and the crew diverted the flight for safety.

Maryland Transportation Authority Police arrested Lundeen upon landing around 10:15 p.m. He faces state charges of second-degree assault and disorderly conduct. He was released on his own recognizance after waiving his right to an attorney at an initial appearance. The FBI is also investigating the incident.

American Airlines stated that the safety of passengers and crew is its top priority and that it does not tolerate violence. The flight continued to Newark after Lundeen was removed.

Lundeen works as a realtor in the Tucson area. Court records confirm the charges stem from the Sept. 3 incident on Flight 618.
