Voters in Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Virginia and Washington cast ballots Tuesday in a round of midterm primaries that featured tests for candidates backed by President Donald Trump on the Republican side and progressive challengers on the Democratic side.

Trump-endorsed candidates have won 97 percent of their primary races so far this cycle, according to Ballotpedia tracking, a rate just below the 98 percent success mark from the prior cycle. The president has endorsed a record number of candidates for 2026 compared with recent even-year elections.

In Kansas, Trump backed state Senate President Ty Masterson in a crowded Republican primary for governor in the race to succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly. Trump also endorsed Sen. Roger Marshall for renomination in the Senate primary against a long-shot challenger.

Missouri Republicans selected among six candidates in a House race for the seat held by Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, with a Trump-backed contender positioned to advance. Other contests on the ballot included Senate and attorney general races in multiple states.

Democratic primaries across the states continued to highlight tensions between the party's progressive wing and more moderate or establishment figures, including scrutiny over foreign policy stances. Races for Senate and House seats drew particular attention as candidates positioned themselves for November's general election battle for congressional control.

Polls closed at varying times across the states, with results expected to clarify nominee fields for several competitive November contests.
