Arizona Senator Mark Kelly (D) is increasingly open about the possibility of running for president in 2028, recently saying that “the answer is I might” when asked whether he would seek the White House.

Kelly has repeatedly stopped short of announcing a campaign, saying he plans to make a decision after the November 2026 midterm elections. In a recent interview, he said a presidential run is something he has considered and that he is discussing the possibility with his family, friends and other people close to him.

The Arizona senator has also said the issues facing the country after the midterms will factor into his decision. Kelly said Democrats’ performance in the 2026 elections will be important as he considers whether to pursue the presidency.

Kelly, a former Navy combat pilot and NASA astronaut, has served in the Senate since 2020. He was also among the finalists considered by then-Vice President Kamala Harris when she selected her 2024 running mate. Harris personally interviewed Kelly, along with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, during the abbreviated selection process before ultimately choosing Walz.

The potential field remains unsettled, with multiple Democratic politicians publicly considering a run ahead of the 2028 election. Reuters reported in July that several Democrats were already taking early steps toward possible presidential campaigns, while the broader field is expected to take shape after the 2026 midterms.

For now, Kelly remains focused on his Senate work and the upcoming midterm elections, leaving his 2028 plans unresolved until after voters head to the polls in November.
