President Donald Trump said Friday at the White House that the war with Iran will end soon and that gasoline prices will subsequently fall, potentially returning to levels seen before the conflict began.

“The war’s going to end soon, and when it ends, your gas prices are going to drop to a level before, maybe even lower,” Trump said.

Gasoline prices have risen sharply during the conflict as disruptions to global oil supplies and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have affected energy markets. The national average for regular gasoline reached about $4.44 per gallon Thursday, according to AAA, while diesel prices reached a record $6.40 per gallon, according to CBS News.

The Strait of Hormuz is a major global energy chokepoint, and reduced tanker traffic through the waterway has contributed to higher oil prices. Brent crude was trading above $100 per barrel this week, more than 50% higher than a year earlier.

Trump has repeatedly said he expects the conflict to eventually end and that energy prices will decline afterward. Earlier this week, he said Iran wants to make a deal, while the administration has continued discussions with regional allies about ending the war.
