Virginia, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, and Washington are all holding contests Tuesday.
VIRGINIA
In Virginia, three GOP candidates are vying to unseat incumbent Democratic Senator Mark Warner, who is unopposed in his primary.
Kim Farington, Bert Mizusawa, and David E. Williams are all running on platforms of stricter immigration laws, calling for harsher crackdowns on illegal immigration and drug trafficking. Each candidate also seeks to reduce needless government spending, with Mizusawa saying the national debt has “more than tripled since Mark Warner joined the Senate.”
Sen. Warner has his priorities focused on public safety, the economy, government efficiency and the 320,000 federal employees who live within the state.
Polling in Virginia will close at 7 p.m.
KANSAS
Kansas sees incumbent Sen. Roger Marshall versus Pond Naramore in the Republican primary.
Sen. Marshall, a physician, prioritizes public health in his campaign, leading the “Make Kansas Healthy Again” initiative, which aims to help Kansans access fresh, local food and nutritional programs for children and families.
Naramore focuses his campaign on holding officials accountable, while wanting to be the voice of Kansas in Washington.
A crowded field of five Democratic opponents is competing for their spot in the primary. Damon Anderson, who is running on unity for the state, says Sen. Marshall has “no interest in bringing us together, nor solving our problems.” Christy Davis, a fifth-generation Kansan, aims her campaign at healthcare, education, immigration, and agriculture. Adam Hamilton’s agenda seeks to keep expenses down while keeping the state affordable. Jason Hart runs his platform on maintaining the values, families, and communities of Kansas. Kevin Latz, a physician, aims to build his campaign on the same principles that he abides by in his medical practice.
Also being voted on, the Kansas special election with the Supreme Court ballot initiative, which will place the option of whether the current system of nominating state Supreme Court judges remains the same or to replace it with direct elections.
Polling in Kansas will close at 8 p.m.
MICHIGAN
In Michigan, three candidates are competing for the democratic ticket. Of the three candidates, two standouts, Abdul El-Sayed and Haley Stevens, have gained increased attention for how they conduct themselves within the party.
El-Sayed, a former Detroit public health official, is backed by progressive leaders, such as Senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Chris Van Hollen, and Tina Smith. This conflicts with Stevens' backing of more traditional democratic members, such as Chuck Schumer, leading to a more contentious race.
The fracturing of the Democratic Party in Michigan will need to be mended by whoever wins tonight's primary.
Regardless, whoever wins the democratic ticket must face Republican Mike Rogers.
Rogers began his career in the United States Army, then transitioned to his role as a Special Agent in the FBI.
Rogers has the backing of President Donald Trump, which has, on average, led to a candidate's advancement into the general election.
Trump’s backing of several candidates for tonight's election will test how strong the President’s endorsement will be going into the midterm elections.
Polling in Michigan will close at 8 p.m.
In Missouri and Washington, the U.S. House primaries will be held until 8 and 11 p.m., respectively.
